The La Favorite Distillery, located in Le Lamentin near Fort-de-France in Martinique, is one of the island’s last remaining family-owned and independent distilleries. Founded in 1842, it was converted into a distillery in 1905 by Henri Dormoy, whose family has since passed down a unique artisanal expertise for four generations.
La Favorite is the only distillery in Martinique that operates entirely with steam power, thanks to a 1906 engine still in use today. It cultivates around 60 hectares of sugarcane, supplying over 60% of its needs, with the remainder sourced from local growers. The cane is cut by hand to preserve its freshness and the quality of the rum.
The distillery produces around 500,000 liters of rum per year, representing less than 3% of Martinique’s total production. It controls the entire production process, from harvesting to distillation, including the aging of its rums in on-site cellars. The rums are distilled in traditional copper Creole columns and aged in oak barrels that previously held cognac or bourbon.
