The Whisky Jury - The Ester Hunter 8 -  Rum Galion 2023 - 2YO - 59.1% - 70cl -

The Ester Hunter series showcases the diversity of high-ester rum, and this Grand Arôme from Le Galion is a perfect example. Finding a young rum that combines aromatic intensity with genuine balance is rare, yet this 2021 vintage immediately stood out. Matured in a refill barrel and bottled at cask strength (59.1%), it delivers the hallmarks of the style: glue, varnish, overripe fruit and complex fermentation notes. Despite its bold character, the profile remains remarkably balanced and approachable. Bottling at natural strength preserves the full richness of the distillate and extends a notably long finish. An authentic Grand Arôme for lovers of characterful rum.

Le Galion holds a unique place in the world of Martinique rum. Its origins date back to the mid-19th century with the construction of the Galion sugar factory between 1863 and 1865, created to centralise the production of several surrounding sugar estates. To this day, it remains the last operating sugar factory in Martinique, preserving an exceptional industrial heritage. Unlike most producers on the island, which focus on agricole rum made from fresh sugar cane juice, Le Galion has historically worked with molasses derived from sugar production. This distinction allows it to produce the famous Grand Arôme rums, a rare category designed not for lightness or delicacy but for exceptional aromatic concentration. Production relies on particularly long fermentations, lasting several days or even weeks depending on the desired profile. These fermentations encourage the formation of large quantities of esters, the aromatic compounds responsible for notes of overripe fruit, fermented pineapple, solvents, glue, varnish and other intense aromas prized by lovers of characterful rum. Historically, Grand Arôme rums were mainly used for blending, flavour enhancement and food applications. Long overlooked, they are now attracting growing interest from enthusiasts through bottlings that showcase their unique personality. Le Galion distillates are renowned for their aromatic power, fermentation-driven character and ability to deliver remarkable complexity even at a young age. They represent a little-known yet essential part of Martinique’s rum heritage.
