The Domaine de Charron, relatively young in the Armagnac landscape, was founded in 1985 by the Lartigue family. Today, the estate is run by Jean-Philippe Balay, a former rugby player and son-in-law of founder Claude Lartigue. With only 3 hectares of vines planted exclusively with Baco grapes, annual production is limited to 5 to 10 barrels per vintage, making it a true micro-distillery. Unlike many estates that still entrust distillation to a mobile still, Charron distils its own wine in an Armagnac copper still that is over 80 years old (dating from 1940), heated with wood and operating continuously. This autonomy, acquired in 2012, guarantees a unique style and remarkable quality control. The eau-de-vie leaves the still at 52-56% ABV, a naturally low alcohol content that promotes the integration of wood during ageing. Located in Perquie, in the Landes region, in the heart of Bas-Armagnac, the vineyard is planted on the famous fauve sands (sandy-clay-siliceous) which give the eaux-de-vie finesse and elegance. The vines, ranging in age from 10 to over 70 years old, are grassed to preserve biodiversity and soil balance. Ageing is another unique feature of the estate: each eau-de-vie is placed straight from the still into new 420-litre barrels made by cooper Gilles Bartholomo in Frêche. The cellars are regularly stirred and aerated to promote oxygenation and aromatic complexity. The Armagnacs of Domaine de Charron are systematically bottled straight from the cask, without reduction, without the addition of sugar or colouring, after at least 10 years of ageing, often with full ageing in new barrels. The result is powerful and elegant Baco 22A Armagnacs, offering intense profiles of prune, cocoa, sweet spices and candied fruit, supported by the depth of new wood and the identity of the fawn-coloured sands. A true signature for connoisseurs in search of authenticity and rarity.
“Grape of the Art” (GotA) is a project that showcases exceptional Armagnacs and Cognacs, bottled in single casks and without reduction, to satisfy rum and whisky lovers. The concept was born of a group of enthusiasts in Stuttgart who, after discovering the quality and diversity of Armagnacs, decided to devote themselves to this French eau-de-vie. Their aim is to reveal the hidden treasures of small producers by selecting rare, unaltered casks.
