A first release from a new distillery always deserves special attention, and this Tormore 1992 is no exception. After 33 years in a refill hogshead, it showcases everything that makes old-generation Speyside whisky so compelling: oxidised orchard fruits, antique wax, furniture polish and delicate leather notes. Its natural strength of 41.8% highlights a silky texture and beautifully integrated aromas. The finish is surprisingly persistent, carrying mature fruit and waxy notes long after the last sip. A rare bottling that perfectly captures the refined and timeless character of Tormore Distillery.
Founded in 1958 and commissioned in 1960, Tormore Distillery is one of Speyside’s youngest historic distilleries, yet also one of its most distinctive from an architectural perspective. Designed by Sir Albert Richardson, the distillery is now recognised as a protected Scottish landmark. Located near the River Spey, it produces a single malt renowned for its balance of fruitiness, elegance and structure. The distillery operates eight copper pot stills (four wash stills and four spirit stills) fitted with purifiers. These devices return part of the heavier vapours back into the still, increasing reflux and helping create a cleaner, more refined and fruit-forward spirit. This technical setup contributes directly to Tormore’s signature profile, often characterised by orchard fruits, ripe citrus, honey and malty cereal notes. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel washbacks, providing consistent process control. While exact fermentation times are not widely documented, the resulting spirit displays a strong ester-driven character, a key component of the distillery’s identity. Maturation traditionally takes place in bourbon and sherry casks, with older sherry-aged vintages being particularly sought after. Over decades of ageing, the naturally fruity distillate develops layers of oxidised yellow fruits, antique wax, dark honey, furniture polish, fine leather and soft spices. The finest bottlings retain remarkable freshness despite their age, highlighting the quality of the underlying spirit. Once overlooked compared with some larger Speyside names, Tormore now enjoys growing recognition among enthusiasts and independent bottlers alike. Vintages from the 1980s and 1990s are especially prized for their ability to combine maturity, elegance and distillate clarity even after very long ageing.
