For The Roots #22, the “Secret Islay” label actually hides a 2013 Lagavulin fully matured in a PX sherry cask. This choice of maturation creates a successful marriage between maritime peat, dark sherry richness and chocolate‑driven indulgence. On the nose, the whisky offers ashy, iodine‑rich smoke with barbecue sauce notes, dark chocolate, dried fruits and caramel. The palate is broad and oily, striking a fine balance between salinity, medicinal peat, PX sweetness and an underlying tension that keeps everything fresh. The finish is long, warm and slightly sticky, with lingering smoke, cocoa and spice.
Lagavulin is one of Islay’s most famous distilleries, located on the island’s south coast between Laphroaig and Ardbeg, overlooking a picturesque bay. Officially founded in 1816 but preceded by a long history of illicit distilling, it is best known today for its iconic 16‑year‑old single malt, a heavily peated, iodine‑rich whisky with notes of sea salt, dark fruits and lapsang souchong tea. Now owned by Diageo, Lagavulin produces around 3 million litres of alcohol per year and remains a benchmark for classic Islay peated whisky.
The Roots, founded by Joren, is a relatively new independent bottler on the spirits scene, dedicated to discovering and showcasing the most distinctive and authentic spirits. These enthusiasts strive to reveal hidden distillery treasures, offering unique bottlings with enchanting, fairy-tale packaging. With limited production, The Roots makes no compromises: quality comes before quantity!
Like all “The Roots” productions, this is a natural-colored, non-cold-filtered whisky. Aged in Hogshead casks. A special bottling for The Roots Second Anniversary!
